Comparing Hearing Aid Features: What's Important?

The features included in your hearing aid will depend on what model of digital hearing aid you choose to purchase. There are a variety of hearing aid styles and types of hearing aids on the market, so your choices are vast.

How do you know which hearing aid model to choose and which features are most important for you? Watch the video below for some tips on what to look for and consider when choosing a new device!

Do you want a battery-operated hearing aid or a rechargeable hearing aid?

Some people find battery-operated hearing aids to be more convenient, especially if they are avid travelers, hikers, or campers. Slip an extra pack of batteries into your bag or pocket and you’re good to go!

Others find rechargeable hearing aids to be far more convenient. Simply place your hearing aids in the charging station or plug them in using a USB cord (depending on the recharging method) and your hearing aids will recharge. With a rechargeable device, there’s no need to keep buying and replacing tiny batteries.

Do you have dexterity issues?

If so, you may want to look for a hearing aid that has a volume control wheel. Volume control wheels are often easier for those with dexterity issues in their fingers to manipulate.

We’ve also found rechargeable hearing aids to be more popular among our customers with dexterity and vision issues. Hearing aid batteries are very small and may be difficult to replace if you have dexterity or vision problems. Rechargeable hearing aids are plugged in or placed in a charging station, so they are often easier to use – no small batteries required!

Are you socially active?

If you are a social butterfly, you may want to choose hearing aids with directional microphones. Directional microphones can be very helpful in noisy situations.

Whether you’re dining in a busy restaurant, enjoying a friend’s birthday party in the backyard, or having a conversation with your loved one at a family gathering, directional microphones can help you focus on what’s important – what you WANT to hear – while reducing background noise

What level of hearing loss are you experiencing?

One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a hearing device is your level of hearing loss. You may want to consider getting a hearing test at your doctor’s office before choosing a hearing aid.

You can also use an Online Hearing Check to gauge the severity of your hearing loss. However, please be aware: online hearing tests are not a substitute for an actual diagnosis. For an actual diagnosis, you will need to see a doctor or audiologist.

Also note: a hearing test is not required to purchase hearing aids.

How often do you use technology, like a smartphone?

Consider your comfort level with technology before purchasing a more advanced device. Some hearing aids can be paired with your smartphone so you can make adjustments through an app on your phone. Would you feel comfortable making adjustments through an app on your smartphone?
Wireless connectivity may also be an option with your new hearing aids. With wireless connectivity, your hearing aid technology can be paired with your television, music device, or cell phone.

However, if you are uncomfortable with new technologies, getting hearing aids with those features may not something that interests you, and in fact, may make the hearing aids more of a hassle for you to use.
